Steyer’s story starts in the early 1990s, when Geoffrey D. Lamming and Richard L. Lamming founded Auto Panels Western.The business initially supplied automotive body panels and components to the trade.
APW begins manufacturing and supplying automotive paint
In 1998, Auto Panels Western (often known as APW) expanded into manufacturing and supplying automotive paint — and the company’s focus increasingly moved towards coatings, colour accuracy, and solving real-world finishing problems.
Specialist and industrial coatings developed; wider application support
- Over time, that expertise extended beyond automotive.
- APW supplied coatings for a wide range of specialist and industrial applications, including work supporting Dyson’s research and development teams, as well as bespoke coatings for unusual requirements.
- The consistent theme throughout was practical problem solving: understanding what the coating needed to do, and making it perform reliably.
- From Multiple Brands to One- As the business grew, different trading names emerged to serve different markets and applications — including Relay Supplies, Clostermann, and other APW product lines.
- While the names differed, the standards, formulations, and technical know-how behind them did not.
Legacy brands consolidated into one: Steyer (inc. Relay Supplies, Clostermann, and other APW lines)
In 2025, those legacy brands were brought together under one name: Steyer. Steyer is now the single, unified brand that incorporates the experience and expertise built under Auto Panels Western (APW), Relay Supplies, Clostermann, and related legacy lines — giving customers one clear identity, with the same quality and continuity behind it.
